Hey. It's kind of cool to have a place I can dedicate to my own ranting here at
HBT.
First off, thanks to everybody who's working on HBT. It's a good place to hang
out.
Second off: what's with all the brouhaha over the recipes database?
Apparently, some people want it to be sort of "off-limits" for anything but the
top 0.01% of all recipes. Others seem to want to see a lot of different recipes
in it.
Personally, I'm in the second group. Why not have a lot of recipes? Sure,
everybody knows what a PITA the Cat's Meow has been in the past, but a good
Search function seems to make it work a lot better. Oh well.
Third off, here's hoping I can get time to brew tomorrow. I've got a huge
backlog of vacation time at work, so I'll be working four days a week for the
next couple of months. Brin on the Cream Ale recipe!
Now, let's see if anybody ever reads this. hi Mom! |

I'd like there be two requirements
for the recipe dbase:
1. It's been brewed, and enjoyed.
2. There is a picture of the final
product. |

+1, I have not added a recipe to
the database although I am working
on a couple, simply because I want
to know that if anyone were to
brew my recipe they will find it
as enjoyable as I did. I can
search the internet for random
recipes, but if I want one I know
is going to be AWESOME, I come
here.
I just hope that this sentiment
can be shared and we keep the
recipe database uncluttered and
free of the "well if I mix this
and this, will it be good"
recipes. |

That's what I do, Bird...I post
recipes, and recipes ideas in the
R/I forum...But I don't release it
to the "official" database until
I'm 100% positive about it. That
includes brewing it multiple
times, having others brew it or at
least taste mine, and even brewing
it in multiple ways exract
w/grains, pm, etc...
That's why I only currently have
one in the database..I've got a
couple that are still in my
tinkering phase...In a few weeks I
will add them. |

Remember, too, there's still the
Recipe/Ingredients forum. Use
that when designing a recipe,
looking for comments, etc; once
you have it locked down and really
like it (post-brewing, ideally
after lettting some other
experienced palattes sample it),
put it in the database. |

I can agree with that. I like the
idea of having most of my brews
out there for public comment, so
I'm partial to putting a lot up.
even mistakes can be learning
experiences for others. I think
I'll be using the blog for that --
recipe and brew reports, with the
database reserved for the stuff
that I think is special in some
way. |

I don't think anyone's advocating
an "Absolute Best, Award-Winning
Only!" filtration. My
perspective, the argument I've put
forth since the get go, was that
to put a recipe in the database,
it would have to be a recipe that
the brewer was willing to stand
behind. That's an intentionally
gray definition, but that's
inevitable. There's also the
issue of - if I'm pulling a recipe
from BrewPastor, I *know* that's
going to be a phenomenal recipe,
whereas something from Joe Shmoe
with fifty posts that I don't
know... you just don't know.
I guess there really isn't a
single answer - but the bias, I
think, should be for fewer - but
better - recipes to make their way
into the database. |

It's a good point, bird. However,
if it's only supposed to have the
"absolute best" recipes according
to the posters, why call it a
database? To me, database implies
lots of data and you have to
search it to find what you're
looking for.
If it's supposed to be a "top
recipes compendium", then why not
call it that? |

Hi, son!
Quality versus quantity. There's
absolute no shortage of recipes
out there; there are thousands,
wherever you look.
What there IS a shortage of is
some way of filtering out the crap
recipes. There's a reason that
there was demand for Jamil to
write his recipe book. Much
better to have a resouce with
maybe a couple of hundred
exceptional recipes, rather than
one with thousands of recipes but
only a couple hundred that are
really any good. |
